A new study published in the latest issue of the New England Journal of Medicine finds that babies born addicted to drugs because of their mother’s addiction to opioids may be weaned more comfortably if the mother gets a new treatment during pregnancy. The babies would then stay in the hospital for less time and their treatment would cost less money.

Dr. Peter Martin, the director of the Division of Addiction Psychiatry at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, discovered that buprenorphine is on par with methadone, when both drugs were given as part of opioid addiction treatment to pregnant women.

“The baby comes into the world addicted to what the mother was taking,” said Martin. “And everyone who comes in touch with these unfortunate babies realizes that they are very uncomfortable and incessantly restless.”

The results of the study indicated that the babies of mothers who received buprenorphine compared to methadone during pregnancy needed significantly less morphine to cope with their withdrawal symptoms experienced soon after birth.

“From this study we can say that both the mothers and the babies did equally well taking buprenorphine or methadone. However, we demonstrated a significant improvement above the standard of care in important outcomes in the babies of mothers who received buprenorphine during the pregnancy compared to those who were administered methadone,” said Martin.

The study claims that the new treatment options should lower the medical and public health costs connected to neonatal treatment of opioid addicition. That cost is estimated at anywhere from $ 70.6 million to $ 112.6 million dollars each year.

Alcohol addiction is a really serious problem, and according to the AMA, it is a disease. This is not a thing that is likely to just go away for good without treatment. It has to be treated as quickly as possible and will also entail a great deal of work as well as continuous vigilance even after finishing an alcohol rehab program to avoid any relapses.

Addiction to alcohol is a constant disease that just can’t be cured by a single trip to a counselor. The process is going to be long and involved, and it might even be painful, but the damage that a one does to their own body as well as to friends and family members is often much worse.

Substance abuse and addiction actually leads to physical changes in the human brain and body. Ultimately a user begins to rely on these substances to be able to support regular systemic operation, and the mind doesn’t know what to do not having it. This is why the very best alcohol rehab program will incorporate a period of detoxing and a continuous support system after the chemicals are eliminated and the body starts to repair itself.

How can you tell when a friend or relative should get into an alcohol rehab program? Alcohol usage is so extensive and common it may be hard for some people to realize that there is a problem. Is the friend who has a tendency to drink too much on evenings out in trouble? Are a few glasses of wine prior to going to bed excessive? What about that shot of whiskey in the morning coffee? The simplest way to find out may be to remove the alcohol from these scenarios and find out what will happen.

Unfortunately, an individual might fully understand they have a drinking problem yet will never look for an alcohol rehab program. There was a popular writer who spoke about his drinking problem and of the time he recognized he was an alcoholic. It was a hard realization, yet he did not think: “I best find help,” he only thought: “I better be careful.” He understood he had a condition, but he didn’t think he could live or write without the crutch of substance abuse.

Alcohol rehab, however, doesn’t need to be voluntary to be effective. Regardless of whether a person is coerced or ordered into a rehabilitation program, there’s a comparatively high rate of success and a lot of people will remain sober after finishing the process. This is why interventions by family and friends are usually the initial step to successfully conquering the compulsion.

An alcohol rehab program will usually begin with the detoxification period. A body must remove the chemicals that are doing harm. Giving up this physical dependency can be tough, and you will encounter some withdrawal symptoms that could be very serious depending on just how long and how much an individual has been drinking.

When this physical issue has been beat, though, it is time to work on the psychological effects. To prevent any relapses and be sure a person stays clean, numerous alcohol rehab programs offer continuing help and guidance to help these people maintain their sobriety and begin a healthier and happier life.

Fear of Detox

The single most common reason why people who suffer from alcohol addiction refuse to accept to enter addiction treatment is because they are afraid to go through the alcohol detox phase of the process. Sometimes people view alcohol detox as still being performed in the manner that it was in the 1940s and 1950s. During the early days of alcohol treatment, patients had to be constrained in strait-jackets while suffering through horrible withdrawals. However, in todays world it is safe to say these old detox methods are counterproductive and are no longer used.

Modern Alcohol Detox

Alcohol addiction rehab treatment has dramatically improved over the last 70 years. Today there are more modern alcohol detoxifications protocols designed to eliminate many of the most painful or uncomfortable withdrawal symptoms associated with detox. The most effective alcohol addiction treatment available today is known as Ibogaine treatment. Ibogaine is illegal in the United States, but is available in select locations around the world. However, even with the advancements of Ibogaine Treatment, recovering from alcoholism is still not an easy process. Recovery from alcohol addiction is still a difficult and lengthy process that requires ongoing support.

Surviving Alcohol Detox

Before any person may begin the alcohol detox and rehabilitation process, they will first have to accept they have a problem with alcohol and that they need help. Another vital step patients will need to take in order to successfully recover from alcohol detox and rehab is to follow their aftercare program as closely as possible. This as they say is where the rubber meets the road. When reintegrating into regular life, you will need to have a rigid structure or routine you follow so you do not get lost in sobriety.
