Wisconsin drug abuse and alcohol abuse problems vary according to the part of the state such as eastern and central sees drug abuse issues with cocaine, crack cocaine, and high purity heroin whereas the majority of drug abuse associated with methamphetamine is in the western part of the state. Wisconsin drug abuse victims are supplied the illegal drugs by organized crime groups such as Mexican drug trafficking organizations, which supplies cocaine, marijuana, and methamphetamine. Nigerian organized criminals control the distribution of Southwest Asian heroin. Dominican organized crime groups control the distribution South American heroin and cocaine. Street gangs and other smaller groups are responsible for the majority of the drugs especially crack cocaine. As you can tell by the graph above, the drug arrest in the state have lowered a bit over the last few years, but this does not mean that drug abuse and alcohol abuse has decreased, it just means that those abusing the substance are not getting arrested.

With the majority of drug and alcohol treatment centers, alcohol is still at the top of the most abused drug at 35.5% with alcohol along with another drug in second place.

In 2006, there were 290 treatment centers offering patients help with all kinds of substance abuse. The various types of treatment can include a 12-step program, support groups, counseling, alcohol detox, drug detox, and behavior medication. The type of treatment needed is often decided by the type of drug abuse a person is suffering from at the time.

Pharmaceutical drugs are a huge problem in Wisconsin just like other states across the nation. Teenagers and even younger children are taking drugs from their medicine cabinets and selling them on the streets in order to purchase the drugs they wish to use as well as stealing the drugs for their own personal use. Drug and alcohol treatment centers in Wisconsin are now seeing more and younger patients than a few years ago. The pharmaceutical drugs most abused include Vicodin, methadone, and OxyContin. Other drug abuse problems creeping up the scale include Benzodiazepines, Deluded, and Precocity.

Wisconsin is home to a wide array of treatment centers that work with the whole person to ensure once they conquer their drug abuse or alcohol abuse they have the resources at hand to stay drug or alcohol free. The majority of drug rehab and alcohol treatment centers receive some type of public funding. The good news is that many of these drug rehab facilities also offer their services to other health care facilities such as hospitals.
