North Dakota has the highest rate of binging on alcohol in the United States as released in a report by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. However, the drug and alcohol treatment centers do not only see individuals with problems due to binging on alcohol. North Dakota also has an underlying drug abuse problem like every state in the US.
In North Dakota, right under binge drinking is methamphetamine. This illegal drug is not only at the top of the list of drug abuse centers but is also a primary concern for law enforcement agencies throughout the state. Right under methamphetamine, is marijuana which is brought into North Dakota through southern states directly from Mexico, with a small amount grown within the state. The age of the individuals most seen in drug rehab centers for methamphetamine addiction are between the ages of 21 and 25 years of age.
Cocaine drug abuse has taken a back seat to methamphetamine. As stated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, cocaine and heroin are not threats in the state as they once were. The majority of heroin found in the state is the Fargo area and is black tar heroin smuggled in from Mexico.
As stated above, methamphetamine is the major drug problem in North Dakota, for both drug rehab centers and law enforcement. The drug is being smuggled into the state in large quantities from Mexican organizations based in California and Washington as well as being made in small labs throughout the state.
Marijuana is seen in North Dakota especially the ever-popular BC Bud from Canada. North Dakota is being used by Vancouver and Manitoba drug organizations to smuggle this very popular highly potent marijuana into the United States.
As stated above, the largest drug abuse problem in North Dakota is binging on alcohol. As a matter of fact, 59 percent of all admissions to drug and alcohol treatment programs in 2007 were all alcohol related. The sad truth is that 12 percent of these were children under the age of 18.
North Dakota may not have many drug and alcohol treatment centers, with only around 65 in the state in 2006; however, with alcohol abuse and drug abuse on the rise, more rehabilitation centers will be created in the near future.
The options for families, drug abusers, or binge drinkers is growing and at the time of this writing there were 22 private non-profit drug and alcohol treatment centers as well as 25 private for profit centers. Thirty five percent of the treatment centers do receive funding from local, state, or federal agencies.
