Vermont’s most prevalent drug abuse problem is alcohol with marijuana coming up quickly as second place, whether it be homegrown or imported, throughout the entire state.
In 2005 as reported by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, the number one drug abuse problem in which individuals were entering drug and alcohol treatment centers was alcohol with alcohol with a secondary drug coming in second place. Both of these were very high on the list at 23.2% for a mixture while alcohol abuse alone was at 30%. The next drug abuse problem on the list was cocaine (smoked) at 3.8% so the difference is quite noticeable. However today, this may not be the same as the United State Drug Enforcement Administration places alcohol at the top of the list with marijuana next with cocaine fast coming up in third place. Of course, when it comes to treatment centers, marijuana is not on the list, thus we see alcohol and cocaine are still in first and second place if we take out marijuana. The problem is that cocaine is a huge drug abuse problem even if people are seeking treatment through a drug and alcohol treatment center.
After cocaine, many people are abusing OxyContin and methamphetamine is also apparent. Vermont shares a border with Canada with Interstate 89 and Interstate 91 allowing drug traffickers ample opportunities to transport all kinds of drugs into Vermont as well as the other direction.
Prescription drugs are a major problem throughout the US and Vermont has its fair share of drug abuse problem with pain and stress relievers such as Vicodin, Xanax, and Valium, not counting the big boy OxyContin. The major problem with prescription drugs is that many children get their hands on these drugs from the medicine cabinet and sell to their friends, gangs give these drugs to children at parties, and doctors often provide prescriptions illegally to those with a drug addiction.
Drug abuse and alcohol abuse is a major problem in the United States and the problem is that many individuals may have an addiction to more than one drug or mix alcohol with drugs. Today, alcohol treatment centers and drug rehab facilities usually have to work with individuals suffering from than one addiction.
In the state of Vermont, there are 40 drug and alcohol treatment or rehabilitation facilities offering a wide array of treatment procedures. The majority of the treatment centers help individuals with substance abuse while a few also work offer mental health services. There are a few that offer various treatment programs include 12-step programs, support groups, group and individual counseling, alcohol detox, drug detox, and behavior medication, to name a few. No matter the type of drug abuse or alcohol abuse issue a person may have, the treatment centers in Vermont will be the first step to recovery. Learning to take one day at a time and living it without the use of the drug or alcohol is the best way to begin again.
