Substance abuse is the repeated use of drugs such as cocaine, heroin and prescription drugs. There are many reasons that contribute to such addictions, such as ineffective parenting, poor social coping skills, association with deviant peer group and peer pressure.
There are various symptoms too, such as forgetfulness, aggressiveness, irritability and getting drunk on a regular basis that can be seen frequently in an individual. If you notice any of the symptoms, it is imperative to approach a drug rehab center otherwise these can have deadly consequences if not treated at the right time. Treating the drug or alcohol abuse at an early stage is the best way to get rid of this habit.
Essentially treatment is a behavior modification therapy that helps drugs and alcohol addicts to come out of this habit and lead a healthy and stress free life. The drug prevention programs made available by the rehab center are offered after analyzing the person’s characteristics and knowing the type of substance being consumed.
The substance abuse treatment programs are carried out by specially trained staff members who are certified or licensed as substance abuse counselors. These substance abuse counselors or specialists identify the individual’s negative behavioral traits and take necessary steps with a positive approach.
Substance abuse counseling plays a crucial role in the psychological recovery of the patient. With this counseling session, addicts are motivated to develop basic problem-solving skills, achieve a balanced lifestyle, improve relationships, find a higher meaning in life and eventually lead a productive and happy life.
There are residential programs, outpatient programs and executive rehab programs also made available to patients by specialists helping in the recovery process. Partial hospitalization and methadone clinics are other amenities provided to individual suffering from alcohol or drug abuse. What is Video Game Addiction?
Video game addicts are living with a psychological addiction to playing. This form of addiction is not currently included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) due to a lack of research and evidence indicating that it is a disorder. If it is officially recognized as a psychological disorder, it will likely be placed in the same category as gambling addiction – a disorder involving a lack of impulse control.
When they play, their brains produce endorphins, giving them a high similar to that experienced by gamblers or drug addicts. Gamers responses to questions even mirror those of alcoholics and gamblers when asked about use
Causes of Addiction
The video game addict may start off playing for fun, but get “hooked” on the fact that video games are designed to give players a series of rewards for reaching certain levels while playing. The person keeps playing in order to keep getting this payoff. The video games also allow players to develop relationships with other players, and the video game addict may find these virtual relationships more rewarding than those that take place outside of the game.
Signs that a person has become a video game addict include:
1. Do you neglect relationships with your friends and family to spend more time playing video games?
2. Do you struggle to keep up with your schoolwork and/or professional responsibilities?
3. Have you ever taken a “sick day” to play your favorite game?
4. Do you lie to others about your video game use? Have you ever been criticized by someone close to you for spending too much time playing video games?
5. When you’re not playing video games, do you feel angry or depressed? Do you spend your time wishing you could be playing your favorite game?
6. Do you get so engrossed in video games that you neglect to eat, sleep or shower?
7. Do you suffer from backaches, dry eyes or headaches after playing video games? Have you been diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome?
Treatment for Video Game Addiction
1. A therapist or treatment program that specializes in adolescents would be a first place to start. For example, a summer camp or wilderness program will get your child out of his normal environment and into a situation where he is forced to experience reality.
2. Sending a socially challenged child to a rough-and-tumble military or boot camp with highly competitive activities could do more harm than good.
3. Sharing experiences and interacting with other video game addicts could also be an essential part of the recovery process.
4. Video Game Detox, treatment for video game addiction is similar to detox for other addictions, with one important difference. Computers have become an important part of everyday life, as well as many jobs, so compulsive gamers cant just look the other way when they see a PC.
5. With appropriate help and support, a video game addict can learn to stop playing games.
However, therapy involving a young child will usually focus on the parents developing strategies and setting appropriate limits for their child.

Some substance abuse treatment facilities specialize in what they provide. They may work only with one type of patient. They may offer services in a specific way such as inpatient. Or they may be associated with a particular religion or philosophical group.
People often think that they need to find a place that works specifically with their problem. If they are dependent on alcohol, they may want a facility that specializes in working with this type of patient. Those with prescription drug problems may search for a place that specifically states it works with these patients. Using a specialized facility is something many patients have success with but most facilities work with a variety of patients. Part of the reason is that chemical dependency shares specific characteristics no matter what substance is used. The second part is that many people need help with more than one issue.
Some people will need the services of inpatient substance abuse treatment facilities. These are the types where people stay for a period of time such as a week or months. There are people who need to be away from their daily lives in order to attain recovery and this can be a suitable option for them. Most people will opt to use outpatient services for a variety of reasons. This tends to cause less disruption overall to normal life. With most people having a job and possibly a partner or family, this type of treatment takes them away only part of the time.
Those who are considering treatment can find services several different ways. It is not uncommon for people to go to their employers EAP, or employee assistance program, to take the first step. Most human resources departments have this system and it is anonymous so people do not have to worry about others learning about their participation. This system helps people to access resources that their insurance carrier will pay for.
Others may turn to some type of facility locator. There are ones that are operated by the US Department of Health and Human Services as well as one that use generic search terms. Many facilities advertise on TV, radio and in various publications. People can contact them to get more information to find out about insurance coverage, time commitment required or other things they want to know more about.
Loved ones and concerned friends who are trying to find services for others need to be aware that this type of “help” usually does not work. Unless a person is ready to commit to treatment, getting them to go is not usually helpful. They will likely stop treatment or will not follow through with what they need to do to recover. Substance abuse treatment facilities are only useful to people who want to use them correctly.

If you are suffering from an alcohol addiction, you are not alone. Alcoholism is a word that sometimes has negative social connotations, and just because a person drinks alcohol does not mean that they are an alcoholic. The amount of alcohol consumed varies greatly from person to person that develops alcoholism, and is also affected by genetic predisposition, and social and emotional health. Alcohol by definition is a disease that results from a persistent use of alcohol despite negative personal, emotional, financial, and professional consequences. Heavy alcohol use accompanied by dependence and symptoms of withdrawal, and the inability to recognize that every bad thing has been related to an alcohol addiction. The sometimes uncontrollable urge to drink leads to constant preoccupation with the drug. Also leads to arrests for drunk driving and extra expenses for a good dui lawyer
According to numerous online sources, the most common substance of abuse resulting in dependence in patients presenting for treatment is alcohol. Overcoming an addiction to anything can be difficult, but there is help and hope available to people who want to stop drinking and get their lives back on track. The mind is more powerful than any drug, and to discover this is to truly be on the road to recovery. Addicts have to make a conscious choice to get and stay sober, one day at a time, and learn how to control the cravings. It’s not something that can be done alone, which is why there are treatment facilities all over the country, most of which are privately owned substance abuse recovery centers. The philosophy of AA or Alcoholics Anonymous has proven to be helpful to many alcoholics in their fight against alcohol addiction, and the program is often used as an adjunct treatment with other therapies, such as in an inpatient setting. AA also encourages communication with a sponsor to help guide the addict through the recovery process, and provide support while working through the program.
