Why Do Some Americans Oppose Health Coverage for People in Less Fortunate Circumstances?

Question by : Why do some Americans oppose health coverage for people in less fortunate circumstances?
Here in Australia we have nationalized health care. It isn’t perfect, but everybody is covered and there is absolutely no talk at all of switching to the American system where people who lose their jobs, etc. are basically given the flick if they need serious medical treatment and can’t pay. We find it shocking that not only do you refuse coverage for the less fortunate, but that there are Americans who argue passionately AGAINST covering those people. I won’t use the term “self centred” but we see it as being exteremely weird.

We are a capitalist democracy who has chosen to provide health care to the needy, viewing it as a human right. And under our health care system, our life expectancy and overall health is better than in America.
PD yes I do indeed donate my hard earned money. And I am happy to do it.
Boomhauser, yes I am in Australia, Forest Lake, QLD, 4078

YOU are the fool, not me. Self centred is the correct spelling. Australian English is slightly different than the American language. Look it up.

Australia is a socialist country, like the UK and Canada, the rest of Europe and rich parts of Asia. Shut up and deal with it.
