Question by eveofthefuture: How can we use anthropology in order to understand “substance abuse” and/or addiction?
Up until now, rehab programs have not been very successful. In your own words, give me some examples where anthropology and sociology can be applied and used in regards to developing a rehab program maybe more adapted to addicts.
xx machina: True, it was extremely important to anthropologists up until recently. Things have changed. With the emergence of what we call in France “Le devoir d’Ingerence,” post- post- modernist theories and more, the idea of objectivity and subjectivity have definitely transformed. New branches of anthropology are actually born with the desire to change the world, therefore, to judge and speak out (applied anthropology is a good example). You will find more and more applied anthropologists working in health organizations, developing health programs with just that “an anthropological approach.” Many medical, cultural, symbolic, urban anthropologists anthropologists have been writing on a social phenomenon called addiction. It would make sense to apply these findings in the benefit (not necessarily judge as you point out) of addicts.
Thank you Dek and Glo.

Taking examples from Native Americans, they used many intoxicants such as plants and herbs and drugs that are now considered to be psychoactive. However, they have/had a strict set of rules and guidelines for usage. For many years they did not have a addiction/abuse issue. However, now they do and have for sometime. The conditions of use, times, places, rules and guidelines changed. They have developed a program called the “wellbriety movement” you may find it quite interesting. go to http://www.whitebison.org and you can find further information regarding this program. Going with the norms of their cultures they include family and community in the abstinence process. Unlike mainstream society with clients in treatment being kept away from family and friends. Getting direct support from therapists, counselors and fellow addicts only. They are given the tools and sent out into society and expected to use these tools and remain clean in the same environment with a family that really has no knowledge of what their loved one is dealing with. I actually just composed a research paper and posted it on my 360 blog the other day…. You are more than welcome to go there an read it if you would like. You can use your own words to show examples. God bless****

Detox programs use several methods to prevail over the physical craving and condition the system for counseling and mental rehab. It is the first part of any treatment program and is necessary for the optimum usefulness of other components such as guidance and care after treatment. Is There a Way to Get Out of Going to a Detox Center?

The method of dealing with substance abuse craving is not an effortless process. You may need to deal with many dilemmas to accomplish your objective. Most rehab centers gives you aid to cleanse your body and remove all the impurities. This process is referred to as detox, and the facilities which provide this program are called detox centers. Without these facilities, the entire process of treatment becomes moot. When an individual is at such a centre, toxins present in the body are removed through several ways. If they are not purged entirely, it may create cravings and the patient tends to go back to the addiction stage.

A Detox Center May Be What You Need

All the treatment courses at the centers for detox are separated into three different types – natural, medical and rapid detox.

The natural detox process employs natural solutions to eliminate harmful toxins from your body. Only all-natural and homeopathic treatments are utilized in this variety of procedure. Typical natural remedies used are Foeniculum vulgare or fennel, and Taraxacum officinalis or dandelion. They are thought of as the most trustworthy way to clear your body. Another technique used by detox centers is medical detox. It is usually written up for users who have various other health-related and mental health difficulties. Natural detox may not be enough in such cases. Close overseeing is needed, and the user may need prescription medications like Klonepin to cut back the withdrawal symptoms. Clients are analyzed consistently checked regularly, and further psychological encouragement is given. This sort of rehabilitation will usually last for three to seven days.

Rapid detox is another option used to eliminate unhealthy toxins from the body. The individual is given common anesthesia and medicines are employed to complete the process rapidly. There are reasons that are too many to mention here, but substance abuse relapse can be avoided if addressed properly.Substance abuse relapse is something that many families have to endure over and over again. This is not intentional that the addict wants to happen, but it happens for a number of reasons:

1. The addict did not get the right treatment

2. Treatment was not personalized

3. The addict did not get involved with a follow up program

4. The addict only underwent a thirty day rehabilitation process

5. The addict returned to old friends

6. The addict returned to old habits

7. The addict was not committed totally to treatment

8. The addict did not receive support from important family members, which could be a parent or a child

9. The addict did not take the treatment seriously

10. The addict did not learn and adapt to the tools and resources provided while in the treatment center.

There are other reasons that are too many to mention here, but substance abuse relapse is something that can be avoided if all of the above reasons are addressed properly. If the addict had to go through an outpatient treatment program, then it is likely that this could also cause relapse because the addict will have structure within the program, but outside of the program, there is no way that they can be supervised. This is difficult for all involved; the addict, the therapist and family members. Outpatient treatment allows the addict to go on with some type of normal life and keep their jobs and be with their families. However, it has its disadvantages because the addict who is recovering is able to still be around the same friends that influenced them. Of course, drug addiction treatment is a choice and the therapist can tell the addict not to hang around these people, but cannot force them to do so. In fact, the therapist is not aware of the addict’s external activities unless it is mentioned during therapy.

Family members who are afraid of substance abuse relapse should lend a hand in ensuring that their loved one does not cling to those that are a bad influence to them during their treatment process. Those addicts who have gone through numerous treatment programs and returned to their old destructive habits will find that it is like a revolving door and family members get tired of the same old story and want to move on and forget about everything. However, family members cannot do this or they will be contributors of a destroyed life. They should probably think about an aggressive intervention that will either allow the individual to accept rehabilitation or reject it.

In the rehab center, the addict needs to stick close to other residents who are doing well. They can both support each other and motivate each other to keep focused so that they can experience full recovery. All it takes is encouragement to stay on the course that has been set by the therapist for the addict. It calls for willpower and the strength of God in order to make it to complete recovery.

Before you make a decision on getting substance abuse treatment, be sure to check out a addiction Rehab and ask them questions so you may make an informed decision on which place is right for you. During your recovery process in a
