Q&A: Question About Rehab Program for Alcoholic…?

Question by mamabunny: Question about rehab program for alcoholic…?
My uncle went into an inpatient rehab program this week for 30 days and 3 days later he was back home. He told us that the counselors said he could do the program on an outpatient basis. He has been an alcoholic for 50 years, a program where he is only there for 5 hours a day, 5 days a week doesn’t seem very appropriate.
I know they can’t keep him against his will, but should we believe that this is what THEY suggested or assume that this was all HE was willing to do?

An alcholic will only stop drinking if they really want to. The physical withdrawl of alchol in the system is complete in three days that is true. However remaining sober is a lifetime committment. Actually if he is the one who made the decision to quit it is not a bad thing to do outpatient, he will have to deal with the real world anyway. However, if he was forced to attend rehab due breaking the law, or family issues it may be he isn’t ready to quit, he HAS to.
Don’t pressure him as to the reasons, try to be there to support. I know many people who were total jerks, mean and stupid when they drank, who quit and became decent,
