The majority of the countryside of West Virginia is rural and therefore wide-open spaces for the clandestine manufacture of meth, growing and cultivating marijuana. Along with this, as stated by the United States Drug Enforcement Administration, cocaine, crack cocaine, and club drugs such as Ecstasy can be found in all areas of the state. The majority of the drugs found in West Virginia often come from nearby the large mid western cities including Detroit, Michigan, and Columbus, Ohio.

In 2006, as noted on the above graph, alcohol alone was the top drug abuse problem causing individuals to enter alcohol treatment centers at 35.5 percent, with alcohol and a secondary drug addiction coming in second at 17.4 percent. As you glance down the graph, you will find that the next drug abuse problem by percentages in 2006 was other opiates at 16.3 percent, and Marijuana coming in a close fourth at 12.4 percent. These figures are more than likely the same for this year; however, these are only the individuals that entered in a type of rehab treatment for their drug abuse or alcohol abuse issue.

In December of 2008, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) reported that alcohol was the most mentioned drug abuse problem mentioned at treatment centers. Other drugs reported were marijuana, opiates not heroin, and cocaine.

Today, West Virginia has its fair share of all kinds of illegal drugs in the state, thus causing the need for treatment centers for drug and alcohol abuse sufferers. The most common drug abuse cases in the state include a large variety of illegal drugs. Heroin drug abuse is on the rise in some areas of West Virginia mainly in the central and northern areas. However, heroin is not the only drug abuse problem on the rise. Some states across the nation have noticed a decrease in methamphetamine labs and so has West Virginia, however, a small change.

Marijuana is found throughout the entire state, grown, cultivated, sold, and of course used by many. In 2008, West Virginia ranked in the top five states for marijuana eradication. With law enforcement working to find all the crops of marijuana, Mexican marijuana may be the most prominent type of marijuana found in the state.

Pharmaceutical drugs are also a major problem in the state. Many individuals are entering drug rehab centers due to abusing pharmaceutical drugs. The major concern in West Virginia includes oxycodone, hydrocodone, methadone, and alprazolam. The ways in which individuals get their hands on these drugs differs from employee theft, forged prescriptions, visiting more than one doctor, to the internet. The newest substance abuse problem with pharmaceuticals is suboxone and carisoprodol. The sad news is that the state leads the nation in methadone related deaths.
