According to the Drug Enforcement Administration, crystal methamphetamine is the drug of choice in the state. Hard to believe with the gambling options and the alcohol beverages so readily available that meth is at the top of the list when it comes to drug abuse. Meth is the most seen drug abuse problem not only for personal use but also the transportation through the state of Nevada. The major meth found in the state is created by super labs, which produce 10 pounds or more in one day controlled by ethnic Mexican drug trafficking organizations operating in both Mexico and California.
Cocaine, especially crack cocaine is just about as threatening as meth in the urban areas of Nevada. With being the perfect route from California to other states of the US, Nevada has become a highway of illegal drug trafficking.
Nevada has other drug abuse problems as well including Mexican black tar heroin, which is under the control of Mexican nationals. Mexican brown heroin is also found in the state but not to the same degree. Club drugs are a major concern in the larger cities such as Las Vegas. The club drugs often seen in the state include MDMA, GHB, and LSD. These drugs are a major part of raves, adult entertainment clubs, and local nightclubs. Drug abuse in Nevada does include marijuana often smuggled into the state by Mexican poly-drug trafficking organizations from California. In the past year, more homegrown marijuana is beginning to be seen probably due to the Assembly Bill 453, which was signed into law in June of 2001, which allows patients to use marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Pharmaceutical drug abuse is also prevalent in Nevada, with the main drug abuse problem being OxyContin. Other drug abuse problems in the state with prescription drugs include hydrocodone, Xanax, codeine, diazepam, Ketamine, Lortab, and oxycodone.
By working to reduce substance abuse the Substance Abuse Prevention and Treatment Agency helps identify abuse by supporting many services, which include prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery. The organization provides funding for facilities to ensure all the facilities have the necessary equipment, staff, and resources to aid individuals with substance abuse. With available money and other resources there are many treatment centers providing help to individuals that would not otherwise receive help.
The Nevada Prevention Resource Center is the State Center for the Nevada Regional Alcohol and Drug Awareness Resource Network. Through this organization, residents can find a large variety of material to aid with substance abuse as well as browse through the library with offers books, audio, video, and other resources to other organizations, families, and individuals. No matter the type of problem a person may have with addiction, Nevada has several alcohol and drug treatment centers that will work with each person on an individual basis to ensure they receive the help they need for their drug abuse or alcohol abuse problem The choice as for the type of treatment that will be best in the situation should be discussed with a doctor or counselor.
